Solo Organ Recital, Saturday, October 20, 2018, at 3pm.
Walter Hilse will play his twenty-sixth annual program at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City. A special feature of the program will be the world première of a transcription for organ solo of Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto, op. 9, no. 8, made by Kalle Toivio, acclaimed Finnish organ recitalist, composer and improviser. Other selections will include Bach’s Trio Sonata No. 2 in C Minor and four chorales from his Orgelbüchlein, as well as a Praeludium by Dietrich Buxtehude and Maurice Duruflé’s Prelude and Fugue on the Name of Alain.

World Premiere of Hilse’s Work for Saxophone and Organ,

Saxophonist Jay Rattman and organist Janet Sora Chung will give the first performance of Walter Hilse’s “Variations and Fugue on Bunessan” as part of their duo recital at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Glen Rock, New Jersey. Jay Rattman, a freelance improviser-composer- woodwind multi-instrumentalist based in New York City, has performed in a wide range of settings, including contemporary classical chamber music, early and straight-ahead jazz, Klezmer, and creative improvisation, and has a discography of over 25 records. Dr. Janet Sora Chung is Director of Music at St. John’s Lutheran Church, New York City, and a frequent organ recitalist here and abroad. Their program will also include works by Jacobus Kloppers, Denis Bédard and Claude Debussy (among others).

Walter Hilse will play an organ recital at Grace Lutheran Church, 21st Avenue at 32nd Street, Astoria, New York. The program will include works by Pachelbel, Bach, Franck, Hilse and Mulet. This will be the inaugural recital on the church’s new instrument, designed and installed by Patrick Murphy.

Walter Hilse will play an organ recital at Grace Lutheran Church, 21st Avenue at 32nd Street, Astoria, New York. The program will include works by Pachelbel, Bach, Franck, Hilse and Mulet. This will be the inaugural recital on the church’s new instrument, designed and installed by Patrick Murphy.

Solo Organ Recital, Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 3pm.
Walter Hilse will play his twenty-fifth annual program on the Bach at Saint Peter’s Series at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City. The program will include Bach’s magnificent Prelude on “Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr,’” BWV 663, and his Trio Sonata V in C Major, as well as works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Max Reger and Hugo Distler. Hilse’s recital will be part of a weekend-long series of concerts and presentations at Saint Peter’s celebrating the 500th anniversary of the founding of the Lutheran Church.

Walter Hilse will play his twenty-fourth annual program on the Bach at Saint Peter’s Series at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City. The program will include Bach’s Canzona in D Minor, Trio Sonata IV in E Minor, and Canonic Variations on “Vom Himmel Hoch,” as well as a toccata by Girolamo Frescobaldi, and Charles-Marie Widor’s Symphonie Gothique (complete).

Walter Hilse will play an organ recital at St. Patrick’s Church, Huntington, New York, as part of the Parish’s ongoing concert series. The program will include works by Buxtehude, Bach, Mendelssohn, Hilse, Mulet and Duruflé, and will feature the Church’s two new pipe organs made by the Sebastian Glück Company.

Walter Hilse will play an organ recital at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Glen Rock, New Jersey, to dedicate the Church’s newly installed Fauchet organ. The program will include works by Buxtehude, Bach, Mendelssohn, Hilse, Mulet and Widor.

Walter Hilse will be organ soloist in a performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, New York City, in a concert by the Greenwich Village Singers, Mark Mangini conducting.

Walter Hilse will play an organ recital at Harbor Baptist Church, Block Island, Rhode Island, to inaugurate the Island’s summer concert series. The program will include works by Bach, Hilse, Mulet and Widor.

The program will include Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Major, Trio Sonata III in D Minor, and selections from the Orgelbüchlein, as well as two hymn preludes by Hayes Biggs, and the Gospel Prelude “Just as I Am” by William Bolcom.

Walter Hilse will be organist in a performance of Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem,” in a Florilegium Chamber Choir concert, Ronald Oliver directing, at the Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch, West End Avenue and 87th Street, New York City.


Première of Psalm 130, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, 6:00 pm
Soprano Liza Sobel and flutist Susan Deaver will give the first performance of Walter Hilse’s setting of Psalm 130, in the annual Holocaust Remembrance Service jointly given by Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church and Central Synagogue. This year the service will be held at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue and 54th Street, New York City. Hilse’s “Hashkiveinu” will be sung by choir and congregation.


Choral Concert, Wednesday, March 4, 2015 , 7:30 pm
Walter Hilse will be organist in a performance of Judith Zaimont’s “Parable, A Tale of Abram and Isaac,” in a Musica Sacra concert at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, New York City, Michael Sheets conducting. Dr. Hilse had also been organist for the première of this work by the Florilegium Chamber Choir in 1995.

Choral Concert, Friday, December 19, 2014, 8 pm.
Walter Hilse will be guest organist and pianist on the annual holiday concert of the Greenwich Village Chamber Singers, at St. Joseph’s Church, Sixth Avenue and Washington Place, New York City. Dr. Hilse will perform solo organ works by American and British composers; and his anthem, “Welcome All Wonders,” will be given its world première by the Chorus, conducted by Mark Mangini.


Première of Psalm 91, Sunday October 26, 2014, 11:00 am.

Walter Hilse’s new a cappella choral setting of Psalm 91 will be given its world première by the choir of Saint Peter’s Church, New York City, at the church’s morning service, led by Thomas Schmidt. Saint Peter’s is at Lexington Avenue and 54th Street.

Walter Hilse will play his twenty-second annual program on the Bach at Saint Peter’s Series at Saint Peter’s Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City. The program will include Bach’s Fantasia and Fugue in C Minor, Pièce d’orgue, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (Dorian), and selections from the Orgelbüchlein, as well as two of Hilse’s own compositions – Intermezzo, and Variations and Fugue on “Yigdal” (prèmiere).

Organ – Vocal Recital, Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at 8:00 pm.
Mezzo-soprano Patricia Sullivan will join Walter Hilse in a duo program at the Harbor Baptist Church, Block Island, Rhode Island. Mr. Hilse will feature works of Bach and Mendelssohn and Ms. Sullivan will offer the premiere of a new Hilse song along with a few cat songs and some Songs of the Hebrides.

Walter Hilse will play his twenty-first annual program on the "Bach at St. Peter's Series" at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City.  The program will include selections from Bach's Clavierübung III and his Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor.   Dr. Hilse will also perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Sonata III and Johann Kuhnau’s Biblical Sonata, “David and Goliath.”

First Performances of new Hilse Psalms, Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 11am

First performances of newly-written psalm settings by Walter Hilse will take place during special services at Saint Peter's Church, New York City, during the current season. Psalm 150, scored for soprano (Liza Sobel), speakers, hand-clappers and drums (all performed by members of the Saint Peter's choir), and organ (Walter Hilse) will be premiered during a Sunday morning service celebrating the Church's 150th anniversary, on December 9, 2012 at 11am

Psalm 44, scored for soprano (Liza Sobel), solo speaker (Nancy Lindeberg), choir and organ (Walter Hilse), will be presented at a Holocaust Remembrance service, sponsored jointly by the Church and Central Synagogue, on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 6 p.m. Thomas Schmidt will conduct both performances.

Walter Hilse will appear as organist and pianist with the Greenwich Village Singers in a concert of holiday music at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 6th Avenue at Washington Place, New York City on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 8 p.m. He will include three of his own hymn preludes for organ solo.

Walter Hilse will play his nineteenth yearly program on the Bach at St. Peter’s Series, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street, New York City.

The program will include selections from Bach’s Clavierübung III and his beloved “Little” Fugue in G Minor, two recently published Early Pieces by Paul Hindemith; and Franz Liszt’s monumental Variations on “Weinen, Klagen.” The Liszt work, a free elaboration on themes from Bach’s Cantata 12 (and the B Minor Mass), will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of this great Romantic musician, one of Bach’s most ardent champions.

The Berkshire Bach Society will present Walter Hilse in a program of works by Bach and Vivaldi, at St. Stephen's Church, in Pittsfield, Mass. Included will be Bach's Toccata and Fugue in F Major, two of the "Leipzig Chorales," and the Bach-Vivaldi organ concertos in D Minor and C Major. For the Concerto in C Major, Dr. Hilse will be joined by an orchestral ensemble directed by Kenneth Cooper.

Solo Organ Recital, Saturday, November 14, 2010, 3 pm

Walter Hilse will play his yearly program on the Bach at St. Peter’s Series, at Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church, New York City.  His selections will include Bach’s Pastorale in F and Prelude and Fugue in E-flat (“Saint Anne”), the Bach-Vivaldi Concerto in D Minor, a sonata by Felix Mendelssohn, and the premiere of a work by Dave Soldier. The Mendelssohn piece will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of this great composer, who was a dedicated champion of Bach.  Soldier’s new work, dedicated to Walter, follows in the contrapuntal tradition of Soldier’s “Hockets and Inventions,” available in a Hilse performance on CD.

The Gregg Smith Singers, Gregg Smith, Conductor, will give the premiere performance of Walter Hilse's Two Lyrics, after Wordsworth as part of their March 13th choral concert at Saint Peter's Lutheran Church, New York City (54th Street & Lexington Avenue).
